2026 // Drought in Northern Kenya
Much of Northern Kenya is experiencing severe drought, putting the nomadic peoples in the region at risk.
“The end of 2024 saw very poor short rains in November and December,” writes John Haspels, of AIM’s Eastern Region office, “and the rains largely failed in Northern Kenya through all of 2025. Water tables have dropped leaving the traditional wells dry and deep boreholes struggling. The herds, which are the lifeblood of these nomadic communities, are having to travel days to find food bringing communities into conflict.”
David Gargule, a pastor in the region writes, “Korr Sub-County is a clear example of the broader crisis affecting Northern Kenya, where prolonged drought has disrupted livelihoods, education, and access to essential services.
“The wells are drying up, causing widespread food scarcity, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and children. An urgent intervention is needed to save lives and provide spiritual nourishment as we navigate this challenging time.”
