Dr. Roger and Shirley Brown have served at Tumaini Counseling Center in Nairobi, Kenya since shortly after its founding in 1991. Roger is a psychiatrist with further specialization in child and adolescent psychiatry. He held a leadership position for many of the early years and has seen the counseling ministry grow to play an essential role in the care of missionaries.
The Browns were instrumental in the vision, fund-raising, and counseling center construction project that houses offices, loaning library, and seminar facility. Roger and Shirley relocated to the US in 2019 and remain full-time with Tumaini. Roger provides input in clinical case staffings, mentoring of clinicians, and recruitment of Christian therapists to support the spread of the Gospel through this vital counseling ministry.
Tumaini is a Swahili word for ‘hope’ and now has a second location in Kampala, Uganda. The clinicians have served missionaries coming from more than 25 sending countries who serve in over 30 African nations. The clinical staff have worked with over 7,000 missionaries representing 150+ evangelical mission organizations.
All of the clinicians are missionaries themselves and are experienced mental health professionals who are able to integrate their faith with counseling. The staff are available for individual, marriage, or family therapy, psychiatric evaluations, medication management, traumatic incident debriefings, and many other issues.
As missionaries and workers are serving in increasingly harsh and sometimes hostile environments, the services of Tumaini are provided with a heart to strengthen and encourage those who are on the frontlines in obedience to the Great Commission.
Our vision statement: Tumaini exists to increase the fruitfulness of disciple-makers through enhancing missionary resilience by offering restorative and preventative mental health and pastoral care services; Care of God's servants is one facet of good stewardship of personnel and resources invested in Kingdom work.
